QW 051812 “Carry on Operation Vowels”

It makes me a bit sad to think that I won’t be able to receive another feedback from my pronunciation teacher until the second week of June, for three more weeks to go. In the meantime, I’ll work by myself on “Operation Vowels”; reading three or four news articles aloud, recording my speech with Voice Memo in an iPod nano, and playing it back on iTunes. Every time I listen to my recorded speech, I’d notice “new” areas that need improvement. I’d like each of you to know that I don’t really know what “nativelikeness” is like. I’m not sure that I’d go for it if I knew what it is. What I do know is that there are problems in my production of certain vowels, variation in intonation patterns, and inconsistency in the way I pronounce proper nouns, and more. For instance, those are some of the specific weaknesses that I’ve working on.

1) [y] in “… (more) yearly…”
2) successive schwas in “… are worried…”
3) [ou] in “poll (results)”
4) [v] and [b] in “… of babies”

That being said, there are the areas that have been improved since a week ago. I’m convinced that I can make things happen if I carry on “Operation Vowels” based on self-feedback for the next three weeks.
