QW 051112 “Male Speakers Only”

Is there any rule or theory that language learners should sound like the same sex native speakers? If so, I’m a gross deviation from the standard. In fact I've never wanted to sound like female native speakers of English. I'd always try imitating male speakers. I don’t really know why I haven’t been attracted to all those beautifully speaking females. I’m just so all the way. My current role model is my pronunciation teacher who, once again is a male speaker of English.

During lunch break, I asked my fellow teachers whether it sounds weird that I want to speak and sound like a speaker of the opposite sex. One of my colleagues defended me, saying I’m not that strange. He stated that low-pitched voices of males sound much more comfortable for ladies to listen to than females’ high-pitched voices, and it shouldn’t be so weird if I, a female language learner, end up wanting to sound like a male speaker. I don’t really know if I just like the way they speak or simply adore their soothing voices. What’s so true here, I think, is that imitating (or copying) needs a lot of time and effort to listen to model speeches carefully and attentively, and you just can’t stand voices, tones, and pitches that you don’t really like for such a long time.

When I got hooked on rock music at the age of 13, my world completely changed. It gave me the reason and objective to learn English seriously. Such sensation still lingers deep inside me. As a “female” English teacher, I might sound so much better if I’d say “I fell in love with ‘Anne of Green Gables’ and started learning English hard.” or “I love Julia Roberts very much, so I just wanted to speak like her.” I’ve never been like that, unfortunately. I’d always want to speak and sound like cool, sexy male native speakers of English. Am I weird?

I really wanted to speak and sound like Stephen Pearcy back then. My all-time favorite from RATT is Robbin "King" Crosby, though!
