QW 050712 “Another Pronunciation Session”

Tonight’s “Operation Vowels” was carried out with a tutor whose lesson I haven’t taken for 6 weeks. (That’s what he said. I think all the tutors out there can access lesson logs of the students that they previously taught.) He’s another eloquently speaking teacher who’s acquired his fluency in English as a second language. The more I work on pronunciation, the more I admire those tutors from the Philippines for achieving such fluency and eloquence. I’m just impressed by devotion and tenaciousness that they have demonstrated in English learning and accent neutralization. When I said what I’ve written here, the tutor humbly hesitated to accept my compliment. Which impressed me, again.

I was so grateful for his offering to read aloud the article of the day for me. I paid close attention to vowels, consonants, liaison, speech contours and everything while the tutor was doing a demonstration for me. The way he speaks English is a bit different from my pronunciation coach, but his speech is definitely another good model for me to learn from. What makes those teachers qualified and competent as a pronunciation teacher is that they’ve worked hard to neutralize their accents themselves, which surely distinguished them from native English teachers in terms of pronunciation teaching while I’d pay all the due respect to those English teachers whose L1 is English.
