QW 042312 “Come on ‘A’ileen”

In terms of my preferences on English tutors who I’d learn from, I consider myself extremely picky. It’s not only because I’m an English teacher myself, but also because I’m an English learner who always wants to be responsible for my own learning. Basically I’m a kind of learner who prefers independent learning, but in some areas I do need some professionals.

I’ve been taking Skype speaking lessons since the end of last year, as you may or may not know, and talked to about 20 tutors so far. Most of them are very professional and accommodating to learners’ needs and wants while a few of them are not very good at student-centered teaching. Besides the expertise and professionalism, I’d also value “chemistry” that would work between a tutor and me. No matter how competent, experienced, and knowledgeable the tutor is, I’d never book his /her lesson unless such chemistry works between us.

Tonight I took Aileen’s lesson for the first time. Her profile rang my bell (a graduate student majoring in Distance Education), and I decided to book her lesson. It turns out, she was GOOD. I’d never say her speech’s free from her L1 accent, but I simply like the way she teaches. Not many tutors correct learners’ errors as long as they’re minor ones, but my tonight’s teacher, Aileen, didn’t fail to identify the way I mispronounced a certain word and corrected me without any unnecessary digression. That was so professional of her. I guess that we’re in the same age group and have something in common. She laughed a lot when I said that my Skype video was not available because I had already removed my make-up. She replied that some students take her lessons in their PJs, but she’d find no problem in it. Yeah, it looks like Aileen will be on my fav-list sometime soon.
