QW 042012 “Pursue Your Path”

I know there are millions, billions, and gazillions of motives for learning something. I know there are millions, billions, and gazillions of people learning English for their own personal motives. It’s perfectly okay for me. And I don’t really care. I think it’s perfectly okay for any learners of English to have personal motives to keep learning the language as long as they’re sincere to their learning.

My motive for learning English has remained all the same since I stared learning the language at the age of twelve: I want to be a good speaker of English. My working definition of being “a good speaker” has been through minor changes as my learning went on, but what underlies there is always the same: I want to be a good speaker of English.

I know there are people who learn something to win over someone else, to make others think he/she is more competent than them, or to simply look “nice and smart”. They don’t even realize that they have such motives deep down, but they sure do. I must admit that I may have had such nonsense and meaningless thoughts back in school days, but now I’m absolutely free from such thoughts, honestly. I just want to pursue my own path to be a good speaker of English.

From time to time I suddenly crave for watching Shizuka Arakawa in the Torino Olympics 2006 when she won a gold medal. Every time I see her skating gracefully with inner serenity, I’d almost cry. I’m not really sure why such sentimentalism keeps coming back to me. One thing I’m so sure of is that she was absolutely free from a motive to win over her competitors or to acquire the gold medal when performing on ice back then. I could be totally wrong, but what I've gathered is that she was just pursuing her own path to be a good skater, which shakes me to the core.
