QW 041912 “Speech Self-Assessment Apr. 2012”

It’s always nice and fortunate to have a friend who’s willing to share whatever worth sharing. My friend taught me how to record conversations on Skype the other day, saying she had read my blog post that complained (complained? No, just wondered about) that I had no idea of how to record the whole Skype conversations. She kindly explained the way to do that with the link to the software called “Tapur” http://www.tapur.com/jp/. Thanks to this easy-to-use software downloaded, I’ve so far reviewed three audio files and noticed the areas that I need to work on. It’s so disappointing and disconcerting to hear my own speech along with tutors who’re, of course, proficient speakers of English both content-wise and pronunciation-wise. I’m full aware, however, that it is necessary to face such disappointment and find ways to overcome my weaknesses to be any better speaker of English. Yeah, life goes on.

Assessing the yesterday’s audio file with Eric, I noticed that I sounded much sloppier than I had thought. Was it just because I woke up from an evening nap right before the lesson and was not fully awake, or it could be that the way I pronounce words and sentences demonstrated L1 influence? Both are plausible, I guess. One more thing to be mentioned here is that there was a “sad” moment when I couldn’t instantly come up with the word “obstetrician and gynecologist” when talking about the shortage in medical staff in our country. It’s even shameful as a woman whose consciousness for health and well-being has a lot to do with those doctors.

Recording whole conversations, not just my own speech, and reviewing audio files subsequently must be effective for speaking practice in a sense that I can later review words and expressions that tutors used during interactions. When I’m engaged in ongoing dialogues, my focus is more on my own speech and on the comprehension of what a person on the other end says to follow and maintain the conversations. When reviewing the exactly same conversations, I’ll be able to reflect on what was actually going on between us, notice my own errors, and access the language of the tutors’ choice.
