QW 041812 “Writer’s High”

I’ve been away from QWing for two days. On the first day, means two days ago, I thought I just could skip the writing practice for a day, which is always the case when I cannot possibly secure time for QWing. On the second day, means yesterday, I loathed my poor time management and cursed my bad habit of procrastination. What "procrastination” is supposed to mean here is that I didn’t get down to the course-paper writing business just as I should’ve. The thing of all this is that I had to write a 2500-3000 word course paper by Tuesday night, but had a really hard time doing that, while procrastinating, procrastinating, and procrastinating over the whole weekend. Then Monday and Tuesday nights were spent for drafting, revising, and proofreading (and submitting).

My initial speculation was that a 2500-3000 word paper would equal to five or six pieces of QW length-wise, so I’d write such an amount of words once I started. No, I was wrong. Well, technically, it was not that I was wrong, but rather, I tried to convince myself that the course paper was not at all a big deal to me to lessen the pressure. It turns out, IT WAS. Smart readers and visitors here and there would say, “Aya, it’s all crystal clear to us that QWing and writing an academic course paper are completely different.” Yes, that’s true. Which I think I was full aware of, but tried to be ignorant of

Squeezing out word by word on an MS word file could be that tough when I’m not enthused in a given topic, namely a mandatory course paper. It’s almost unlikely for me to go through “writer’s high”, writers’ equivalent of “runner’s high” for joggers and runners. When QWing on a topic that I’m thrilled to write on, I’d always experience “writer’s high”. I guess almost all writers in either L1, L2, or even L3 would go through such ecstatic moments. You could also say “flow” instead to describe what’s going on in their minds.

Anyway, there was no writer’s high, but there was a written course paper. In fact it was the very LAST paper that I was required to submit for my three-and-a-half-year course work for the master’s program. Now I’m quite happy to be free from all the mandatory academic writing, and can be engaged in voluntary personal writing that brings me “writer’s high”.
