QW 041512 “A Journey with Moon Palace”

That was a lot more enjoyable journey than I had expected. Since December 29th last year, I’ve been reading the novel “Moon Palace” by Paul Auster as part of my morning routine. It’s not just reading silently. I read three or four pages of this paperback aloud. Before that, my Ondoku (reading aloud practice) materials were taken basically from online articles, but I thought I could read a whole story little by little every day rather than picking up an 800 word passage each time. It was a 109-day journey.

I used to look up unfamiliar words that I had marked while reading aloud after finishing three or four pages, but I quit. It became more and more time-consuming and I started thinking that it might be better to compile all the words later and move onto the story as far a s I could as a 10-minute morning routine. It turns out, it seems to work for me. I became eager to follow the story and maintain the drive to read further without interruption as I continued to read. It made me feel rather guilty to just mark the words, guess their meanings, and move on without using dictionaries, but it was a good compromise, I believe.

The beauty of reading a whole story aloud lies in, I think, that you can be absorbed in the world of a fiction. While reading, you’re in a virtual world that an author created for you. Also, you’ll become more and more familiar with a writing style of the author and be able to pay more and more attention to his/her distinctive style and frequently used words and sentence constructions.

Here’s another beauty of being with one author at a time. When you go with one author, you’ll become more and more fluent in reading aloud the sentences that he/she wrote. I felt more and more comfortable reading passages of “Moon Palace” as time went by during the past three months. So I decided to go with another Paul Auster’s: “The Book of Illusions”. It’s going to be another more than 100-day journey. I’m thrilled to go on my next journey led by Auster.
