QW 041312 “A Burning Passion”

I finished all the course work to earn the master’s degree last Wednesday. It really was a memorable as well as sad moment for me. It makes me sad to realize that I no longer need to do all reading assignments, come to class, give presentations, and write course papers. Anyway, it’s the end of one chapter of my life, and also the beginning of a new one.

From now on I’d like to share much more of what I’ve been through as an English learner with the people around me or “virtually” around me. What “virtually” means here is that as an English teacher who considers her job responsibility as to help learners I’m teaching reach what they’re after in terms of English learning, I’ve long thought that there would be a great deal of “limitation” on what I could say to the people I won’t be able to teach or talk in person. In other words, it would be next to impossible for me, for others as well, to generalize what works to English learners with a wide variety of learning histories, learning styles, learning needs and wants, current proficiency, and everything. I still think it is so, but I’d like to give a shot in finding what I could do as an advanced English learner who has been learning English within her country all through her English learning history.

During a Skype English lesson with one of my most favorite tutors, he used the phrase “a burning passion”. He speaks flawless English with a 100% native-like accent absolutely free from any local accents. In one of the responses to the questions that I flooded him with tonight, he said “It takes a burning passion in learning anything”. He absorbed himself in a training to acquire the American accent of his favorite radio DJ in his college days, and he made it. And he’s still learning. Which was a very relatable narrative to me. I do hope that I could share such “a burning passion” with all the English learners in my country.

"Fire Woman" in their fourth album, "Sonic Temple" is one of my favorite.
