QW 041012 “Thanks for the Company & Beer”

He’s my colleague at one of the two universities I’ve been working part-time. I had known him before I started teaching there as a research subject of his doctoral program course work. Well, that wasn’t so formal research project. All I did for him was to sit for an hour-long interview. It was just a coincidence we live in the same city, one is the southerner, the other is the northerner. It was last year when I joined the university program as a faculty member, and he was among few people that I had already known back then. We worked on different days last academic year, so we never met or took the same train home, but so did we today. He and I are teaching classes there on Tuesday for the year 2012.

While going back to the part-time teachers’ room, I found him on the hallway and exchanged some words. I knew he’ll be teaching a TOEFL class for the first time since he joined the program and he didn’t very much welcome that shift, so I wanted to know what his class was like. In fact he was assigned the new class because the program coordinator arranged me to teach a writing course, which was eventually canceled due to the unexpected time conflict between other required/elective courses. In the elevator I told him the situation and said “I’m not complaining.”, and he shot back “I would.” and started complaining just for me. Well, it’s nice to have a sympathetic colleague who gets angry for you.

We took the express train and talked over screw-top bottles of Asahi Super Dry he bought at the station, one of which was his treat to me. He started three years earlier than me and has seen many things about the program. I appreciated the honesty and candidness that he displayed. He told me that he would spend more time on his own interest besides work, and I agreed that it was a good idea, considering his busy years, juggling the academic, occupational, and family responsibilities. Currently he’s engaged in body-building after a 20 year break. He’s now taking it slow and enjoying how his body will be rebuilt. Well, yeah, it’s also nice to have a colleague who’s sympathetic, professional, and physically attractive.
