QW 040912 “Back to School 2”

Another Academic year 2012 started at the other of the two universities that I’ve been teaching for years. I met new students of three classes and seemingly, each class was launched with no conceivable problem. It’s kind of strange that it feels like that I regain my vigor, energy, and vitality upon reuniting with the students that I taught before after a while and meeting new students that I am going to teach. Does this mean that I’m usually lacking vigor, energy and vitality that are dormant inside me? Does this mean that seeing my students unleashed my passion to help them learn English whatever it takes? Well, I don’t have any legitimate answer to it. In any case, Day 1 was peacefully was finished just as it was supposed to be.

One funny thing happened when I was talking to students in a reading and writing course for those who’re majoring Spanish, Chinese, Korean. This required English course for non-English majoring sophomore students needs to be taught in English. Which I think is ideal, by the way. It was when I was emphasizing how important it is to be confident in speaking any languages after I had mentioned the students already have decent proficiency in English, but it seemed that they needed to be much more convinced that they could utilize their English skills actively. When I uttered the phrase, “the importance of confidence”, I switched into Japanese like “Jishin-no-Jyuuyousei” out of the blue, thinking the phrase was going to be a keyword for them. Plus I, consciously or unconsciously, tried eliciting their attention by suddenly starting to speak Japanese. And it worked. Terribly and terrifically. 24 students just hold their breaths, rolled their eyes, and burst into laugh. They were saying “She spoke Japanese!” “What a huge gap!” “A fascinating gap! (“Gap- Moe” is the Japanese phrase they actually used)”. After such a good unintended ice breaker, the classes went on even more smoothly.
