QW 040712 “Speech Self-Assessment Apr. 2012”

According to my personal lesson log, I’ve taken 63 Skype lessons in about three months. Simple math shows that I took two lessons in three days. I paid 15000 yen already during those months, so it comes down that one lesson costs 238 yen. Well, it’s not a bad deal. If someone asks me if my speaking skills have been improved since three months ago, I’d definitely say “yes” although there’s no scientific data to verify my answer. Comparing my recorded speech in January and the one in last night’s lesson alone, I can specify the areas that demonstrate noticeable progress as follows:

1. Vocabulary
This is the area that I’ll need to focus most in order to convert my receptive level vocabulary to the active one. Before reading aloud an online article of the day, there’s a warm-up activity to check five keywords and their definitions appearing in the article, in which a tutor asks a student to make sentences using those five words. I’m becoming used to the improvised sentence making thing, but it’s not my final goal, obviously. I need to be able to choose the most appropriate word from my active vocabulary storage while managing free speech. I’m wondering if I can compile five words in each lesson somewhere in some ways and review occasionally, which in fact I should’ve stated doing long time ago.

2. Discourse management
It’s not easy to self-assess my own discourse management, so I can only talk about it from my subjective viewpoints. At a basic level, unnecessary “maybes” and rash speech have totally been eradicated; Empty laughs are on the decrease; Illogical “buts” have survived, but some of them have become logical. My next issue is not to launch my speech with “I” so often. Listening to my recorded speech gets very embarrassing when I was searching for the next word saying “I, uh… I…” It makes me sound like a total beginner! And I’m not. I’m full aware that I need to speak like an advanced English learner, so I’ll keep trying.
