QW 040512 “Academic Year 2012”

Academic Year 2012 has just started. I’ll continue teaching at the same schools, two universities and one foreign language institute. The classes that I’m going to teach, however, are a little different than those of the previous academic year.

At a university offering the International Program for students who’d like to improve their English proficiency through English-medium courses, I’ll be teaching two TOEFL classes and one academic writing course. The TOEFL classes are for intermediate-level learners who aim to achieve more than 480 on the paper-based TOEFL test by the end of the spring semester as a requirement to stay in the International Program for the fall semester. I learned from last years’ experiences that the students in this program tend to have a weakness in listening skills whereas they have solid grammatical knowledge and basic vocabulary. What I need to focus in this class is on developing their listening skills and on expanding their reading speed and accuracy.

This is going to be the first year for me to teach the academic writing class for the International Program. In fact this class is what I look forward to teaching most because I love writing myself and sharing joy of writing with others. The students in this class will be assigned daily Quick Write (70 in total), 17 outlinings, 5 multi-draft essays. They will be writing so many pieces in English and learning how to be a good writer of English. It’s not easy, but worth investing their time and effort.

At the other university, I’ll be teaching a TOEFL class, a TOEIC class, and a reading & writing class. All classes are exactly the ones that I’ve been teaching for years, but I’ve drastically changed materials used for two of three classes, for which I’ll need to go through “plan-do-see-check” cycles even more carefully.

At a foreign language institute, I’ll be teaching an intensive English course for those who aim to transfer to a sister university, a TOEIC class for advanced learners, and a TOEIC speaking test class for advanced learners. It’s honorable for a non-English native teacher to be assigned a speaking class, so I’ll make every possible effort to further develop students’ speaking ability.

Well, this year, again, I’ll be teaching a variety of classes. It will make me focused on my job as an English teacher. It will also make me feel happier, conceiving I can contribute to students’ future to come. While writing this part, I remember a quote that I found on Facebook tonight: Power is the ability to do good things for others. (Brooke Astor) I don’ have such “power”, but if I have some “experiences” as an English learner and some “expertise” as an English teacher, I’d use them to do good things for my students.
