QW 032112 “Memories of Wendy’s”

The following Gawker article reminds me of a hamburger chain that went out of business in Japan a while ago: “Wendy’s Overthrows Burger King; Rivers Run Red with the Blood of Burger Nobles” How many people in Japan have ever known Wendy’s? I doubt there’re not so many. The name of this fast-food chain whose apple pie used to be my then-favorite brings me back to my high school days when I occasionally skipped school and spent some time at Wendy’s near the JR Ebisu station. I don’t quite remember why I didn’t want to go to school during those days. It was not like that I was being bullied or left behind in class. It was like I just didn’t feel like taking trains, going to school, and take classes. Once I learned to drop by at Wendy’s in the morning, I would chronically sabotage school and spent one or two hours there. There was no choice but to go to school after all, but I couldn’t cheer myself up and go straight to school a few hours earlier. Later, my brother told me that my mother was worried about my “bad” habit and told him her concern that I had been pathologically depressed or had some serious mental problem. Well, neither was the case with me in fact. I was just trying to escape from what I had to do, i.e. go to school every day. It must’ve been so simple a thing to do, but I really had trouble doing that. I do hope my dear students won’t read this post. Seriously.
