QW 030312 “Pretty and/or Smart”

This Slate article is a good read, poignant, but has something every woman can relate herself to. The story itself was, for me, kind of predictable and generic, which never means that I’m able to write such an essay, though. (For me, the whole thing comes down to like this: You could never expect to find LOVE, not LUST, from a guy who picked you up at a hotel bar while on business trip. Period. ) I liked the piece in the way that it invited me to self-reflection on how I was raised by my parents. The author wrote that she was once told by her dad as a kid like, “Girls need to be pretty or smart to get through life. And you’re smart, which is better in the long run.” That’s something I’ve never heard from either of my parents. I’m the only daughter in my family with two elder brothers. I couldn’t be outrageously wrong to say that my parents raised me, rather intentionally, almost in the same way as they did to their two sons. I can’t really recall any preach made by my parents that girls should/shouldn’t do this and that. Which I was, am and will be grateful for. The author’s ex-husband told her that he’d like her even if she was a brain in a bottle, means he adored her intelligence and smartness. Well, I won’t deny the fact that the appreciation of my intelligence and smartness, if there’s any to begin with, makes me glad and proud, but hearing such metaphor of the brain-bottle thing never makes me any happier if it came out of from someone I love. I’d apologize for my being inconsistent, unpredictable, unreasonable, complex and everything. I’d hate if guys around me thought I’m not very smart, but I’d be disappointed if they ignored my physicality because it’ s not at all attractive to them. In sum, I’d like to be as pretty AND smart as I could be. In fact it’s quite simple.
