QW 021412 “More in return ”

I was going to write another Ricky Gervais QW post, but I changed my mind. Today on St. Valentine’s Day, I was assigned two company classes to teach. One is a semi-regular class that I’ve been teaching sporadically for the last two months. The other is the class that I was going to teach for the very first time. What I had heard was that more than 80 people were coming from Kanto and other areas to take 4+1/2 hour English class. In fact, 80 is the largest number of students that I have ever taught at one time (50 was the largest number so far). Plus, it was sort of hard to imagine or simulate what the demographics of students were going to be like, which is always one of the most crucial date for designing effective lesson plans. All those factors made me a bit uneasy, but all I could do was just do what I could do for them, teach whatever educational, effective, and conducive to their English learning I could think of, and above all things, I should be sincere to everyone’s learning.

It turned out, I would really like to teach that class again soon. The moment I said “Good afternoon!” in Japanese, they responded “GOOD AFTERNOON!” as if they were perky grade schoolers. I fell in love with all the 80 students and I told them so. The class was more than 4 hours, yet almost nobody lost their attention in the course of lesson. They did a lot of Listen-and-Repeat practice, Ondoku practice, Overlapping, Shadowing, Pair-work and everything. After the class, I had a brief talk with two male students. One of the guy said to me, “I spent as many as 400 hours on an online e-learning program assigned by the company, but 4 hours that I spent in class today was much more worth than those 400 hours, seriously.” The other guy said to me, “We had lots of interactions with people today. It made me realize why I am learning English. I’ll strive even more. I wish we could take your class every week.”

I had a great St. Valentine's Day. I was going to fill the students with my love since it was a day of love, but ended up with receiving much more of it in return.
