What are the best ways to promote a new or improved product? Give reasons and examples or support your opinion.


I guess there are millions of ways to promote a new product, such as TV ads, radio ads, newspaper ads, the Internet banners, informarcials, telemarketing and the like. If you are about to promote the product targeted at the young demographic in particular, I would definitely propose using social networking services (SNSs) as the main advertisement and marketing tool. My proposal is elaborated as follows.

First of all, we as consumers are sick and tired of conventional advertisements. According to my observations, I personally think that the young people who are considered so-called “digital native” generation are very skeptical about what the advertisements say about their products. They would prefer seeing, touching and trying the item that they consider purchasing. Alternatively, they rely on what their friends say about the item in case they have no access to the actual product. Looking back at the time when I was younger, I wouldn’t easily trust what adults say. Instead, what my friends or the people at my age said had huge influence on my decision. This tendency that is seen among young generation is still alive, or even more salient, I think. To attract those people, we will need to come up with new and authentic ideas and methods to promote new products.

In order to have those younger demographics like a new or improved product, SNSs can be a strong tool for them to publicize what the new product is all about. If someone saw an ad and went so far as to buy and use the product, and posted a positive comment on one of those SNSs, the reputation will soon get viral and spread among his or her friends and acquaintances. This kind of promotion is authentic in a sense that the user of the product just posted what he or she thought with almost no intention to sell or promote the item. Probably the person just wanted to share something he or she found good. In order to elicit the attention of such potential customers, it’s not a bad idea to place ads online, on SNS websites in particular, and wait for the product to go viral in online communities.

Plus, using SNSs has a financial advantage. Unlike the conventional advertising tools, placing ads online should be much cheaper and handy. Thanks to the advance of technology, it’s possible to create very attractive promotional materials exclusively for Internet access. It’s more flexible and has a variety of options than the old-style TV commercials or telemarketing. It’s suitable to appeal to the young generation whose interests are subject to change.
