QW 011412 “300/30 Topic 4”

It’s the fourth QW 30/300, “write more than 300 words in 30 minutes”, piece. You’re also invited to write on the same topic and post pour product on QWF.

【Topic 4】
A lawmaker in your country has proposed that young people should be required to serve in the military or other state-run organization for 18 months when they reach the age of 20 or when they graduate from college or university. Do you think this is a good idea? Give reasons or examples to support your opinion.

I don’t think it’s a good idea for young people to be required to spend their precious time in the military or other state-run organization for whatever purposes. I’m guessing that the lawmaker proposed to this plan with the intention that it does good for the young people and their future, but I don’t really think so. My argument is elaborated as follows.

I’d strongly argue that serving in the military or other organization is not something that you’re forced to do. If young people are forced or required to do so, I guess they will have difficulty finding the objective for what they are doing, and eventually, will be demotivated in serving for such an organization. The period in which young people spend time engaging in the mission that they find no motive will be total waste of their precious time, and influence the perspectives that they would hold in a negative way.

You could argue that you will learn a great deal by doing what you are not willing to do while cultivating the perseverance or guts to confront the tough reality, but I would counterargue that young people will undergo such situations anyway after they start making their own living. Serving in the military or other public organization could have them experience something valuable, but those lessons are what they will learn in the course of their lives, I would insist.

In addition, young people will find it hard to make plans in their early twenties if they are required to spend 18 months in the places which are not at all of their choices. I would never imagining myself working for the public organization as soon as I graduate university not being able to launch my career of my own choice. I would never ask young people to sacrifice the time of their lives, knowing it should never be easy to take.

I am not sure why the lawmaker has come up with such a brutal plan, but I am so sure how outrageous this could be and I would strongly oppose to this proposal.
