QW 011112 “300/30 Topic 2”

It’s the second QW 30/300 piece as a sequel post to QW010912. 30/300 stands for to “write more than 300 words in 30 minutes” including the time for brainstorming ideas for an essay. You’re invited to write on the same topic and post pour product on QWF. It should be a good writing exercise for you all here.

【Topic 2】
A well known soft-drink manufacturer has offered to donate a rather large amount of money to a high school’s athletic fund if the company is allowed to place three soft-drink vending machines at the school. Should the school accept the company’s offer? Give reasons or examples to support your opinion.

I must say I absolutely agree with the idea that the school should accept the offer form the company and install three vending machines on the premises. My argument focuses on what the school and its athletic fund will benefit from taking the offer although newly-installed vending machines will have a slight impact of students’ dietary habit. Here are a few points to elaborate the way how I see this issue.

I think it’s safe to say that sports need money. If a high school would like to support its athletic club activities, they will need a decent amount of money to maintain the training facilities, hire skillful coaches, and pay the cost to send the athletes to competitions in distant places. The school calls for donation from people concerned, such as students’ family and guardians, alumni and alumnus, but I guess the collected money is not necessarily enough. If anyone offers financial support, I’d say they should thankfully take the offer and invest the money as wisely as possible to foster its athletic activities athletes. If the school has born top-notch athletes with abundance of financial support from the third party or whoever, the school will attract young athletes who have good potential, which will bring even greater success in its athletic activities. It’s true the money doesn’t always guarantee good achievement of sports, but does provide good environment for fostering good athletes.

The concern that needs to be mentioned here is about possible influence or adverse effect that installation of vending machine would bring to students. It is very likely that they start buying and drinking bottles of soft-drink from the vending machines once they’re available. However, I could argue that the students are already in their mid-teens and can have responsibility for what they’d drink and how they’d stay healthy, rather than blame the availability of soft-drinks at their school. When I was in high school, I would buy soft-drinks from a vending machine being careful of the amount of intake of those seemingly unhealthy soft-drinks. I bet young people at that age are very conscious about their appearance as well as their health, so they’d take a good control of how much of soft-drink they should have. Also, the students cannot always afford to buy those kinds of beverages, meaning they would never drink too much of it.

For those reasons, I’d definitely support the offer from the company and recommend the high school to take the offer. The school won’t have to be too concerned about the negative effect on the students’ health and diet by providing them the access to soft-drinks.
