QW 010912 “300/30 Topic 1”

30/300 in today’s QW title means “write more than 300 words in 30 minutes”. TOEFL iBT and TOEIC SW tests have the essay section for which test-takers are expected to write clear and cogent essays consisting of more than 300 words within 30 minutes. I’ll try writing several topics in the same setting this week. Your QW pieces on the topic will be more than welcome.

【Topic 1】
A restaurant where you sometimes eat is thinking of adopting a non-smoking policy for all operating hours. What do you think of that idea? If they change to a non-smoking restaurant, will you continue to go there? Give reasons or examples to support your opinion.

I’d be more than happy to welcome the change in the restaurant policy that they’ll be converted non-smoking restaurant. I always prefer tables in the non-smoking sections whenever I dine out or have coffee, so it’s ideal for me if the tables in a restaurant I frequent are not for smokers. I also think not a few people would share my view on the restaurant new policy to exclude smokers. Here are some points that support my opinion and elaborate reasons why I think that way, trying to generalize my personal opinion.

The first thing that comes to my mind is my that less people smoke these days whereas more and more people. Non-smokers hate to sit close to smokers in restaurants or cafes, and thus, they tend to prefer tables in the non-smoking sections whenever possible. If a restaurant in question is converted into a smoker-free eatery, a lot of non-smokers will visit the place seeking stress-free, enjoyable dining time. Take Starbucks for example. It’s a café whose seats are all for non-smokers. Despite its costly coffee, customers keep going to the café looking for smoke-free environment. I think there should be the constant need for a place where non-smokers sit back and relax without worrying if smokers would sit close, and those people are happy to pay the price to secure such environment.

Also, non-smoking policy is good for the restaurant themselves, saving workload. They need to wash ashtrays that smoking customers used and set a new one on a table for next customers. They can save such work if a restaurant is converted for non-smokers. Additionally, restaurant employees won’t have to ask customers if they’d prefer smoking section or non-smoking section and search for the tables at their preferences on smoking. It’s much simpler and takes less time to ask the number of customers and allocate any tables available.

The only concern is that smokers will stop going to a restaurant which has adopted a non-smoking policy. However, when you compare the number of smoking customers that the restaurant will lose with the number of non-smoking customers that they will attract, the latter should be much more than the former, I suppose when considering the trend that people are getting more and more health conscious and are driven to quit smoking.

In sum, I’d say it’s a clever business decision for a restaurant to adopt a non-smoking policy for all operating hours even though they’d end up losing smoking customers.
