QW 010812 “Speech Self-Assessment Jan.8”

I usually do QWing after a midnight Skype lesson, but have two hours till tonight’s, so I’ll switch the regular order of the two components in my daily English regimen. I’ll self-assess my speech in the past three lessons.

1) Unnecessary Maybes & Illogical Buts
They’ve been significantly reduced. Buts are stickier than Maybes, yet it seems that I’ve started to gain a better control over these fillers. When I’m faced with a question that I find difficult to respond to, my mouth-factory suddenly starts mass-producing maybes which have already saturated its market. Buts can be replaced with “wells, ahs, and you knows”. I understand that as knowledge, but I still need some more time and practice to apply it in live interactions.

2) Empty laughs
I can see they’re on the right track to constant decrease. Empty laughter emerges when I feel I’ve talked too much or said something I consider embarrassing, and/or I need to “hide” my awkwardness. It’s not bad or sinful at all for anyone to feel embarrassment or awkwardness in conversations. I just don’t like meaningless empty uncool laughter when speaking English. Cultivating the courage to bear embarrassment and awkwardness and survive a dead silence, if any, might help improve and advance my speech.

3) Rash speech
I’ve noticed that my speech gets unreasonably fast when I go into the topic that I’m not familiar with or don’t really know what I’m talking about. Rash speech spoils everything. My pronunciation stars to show L1 influence I sound less confident. It’s so funny that I can think of many other alternatives to respond to the question I was struggling when I’m listening to recordings. Does that mean if I become aware that I’m speaking too fast and slow down the rate of speech, I would secure a little more time to gather my thoughts and present them in more cogent and concise ways? My next agenda might be to pay more attention to the rate of speech and gain better control of it. I’ll try working on that tonight.
