Quick Write 122511 “Salon: 20111221 Part 2”

It’s just so funny that I’m writing on a topic absolutely unrelated to Christmas. As a sequel to QW1224 piece, I’ll talk a bit about some of 18 phrases as follows.

【phrases and collocations】
1) pique my curiosity 2) make a decent wage 3) be on a sinking ship 4) be so far in the red 5) score an interview 6) be up against 7) have a shot 8) bona fide 9) trigger a desire to do 10) reinvent oneself 11) well-versed with something 12) with decent skills and a desire to learn 13) shake a nervous excitement 14) come in the form of 15) be launched on guess-and-test method 16) a total bum 17) scoff at (the bad tip) 18) constant barrage about (our broken economy) from the article I “The psychic who predicted my career
2) a decent wage & 12) decent skills
The adjective “decent” refers to “of an acceptable standard, satisfactory, or good” (OED). I searched for collocations of decent in "Weblio concordance" and got the results like “a decent affordable home”, “a decent amount of controversy”, “a decent job”, “a decent profit”, and so on.

5) score an interview
The verb score can be used like “score a success, a victory, or a hit” as you are successful in what you are doing (Collins Cobuilt dictionary). So you can say “score an interview” as “successfully pass an interview”.

14) come in form of
The original sentence is “My compensation came in the form of experience, peanut M &Ms, bagels on Friday, and all the black coffee I could drink.” What a nice office. We can see from the sentence that “come in the form of” is used when something expected eventually comes to you as something else, as in “Blessings would come in the form of strangers.” or “Consent doesn’t come in the form of silence.” or “Christmas gifts come in the form of mutual love.” Oh, yeah, here’s something seasonal, finally.

Land in "Land the Job" means "succeed in obtaining or achieving something desirable, especially in the face of competition". (OED)
