Quick Write 122411 “Salon: 20111221 Part 1”

The article I’m reading aloud for a couple of days is “The psychic who predicted my career” from salon. No worries. It’s about nothing supernatural or occult, but is a nice, encouraging story about the person who found his brilliant second career in a little unexpected way. I admit that the word “psychic” attracted my initial curiosity, though. Yeah, I used to be interested in palm-reading kind of stuff, but not so much right now. I don’t really know why, though. Anyway as I read the piece, I realized the article was plainly written and contained a lot of useful phrases for L2 writers like me who wishes to learn phrases and collocations that native English-speaking writers would use in their pieces.

【phrases and collocations】
1) pique my curiosity 2) make a decent wage 3) be on a sinking ship 4) be so far in the red 5) score an interview 6) be up against 7) have a shot 8) bona fide 9) trigger a desire to do 10) reinvent oneself 11) well-versed with something 12) with decent skills and a desire to learn 13) shake a nervous excitement 14) come in the form of 15) be launched on guess-and-test method 16) a total bum 17) scoff at (the bad tip) 18) constant barrage about (our broken economy)

Now let me stop QWing. My previous experiences are telling me that it’s very likely that I’ll end up writing more than 500 words if I go onto talking about those phrases, and I know it will no longer be “Quick Write”. I’ll be back with the same topic tomorrow. See you then.
