Quick Write 121911 “preeminent and foremost”

I took the December TOEFL PBT with 69 test-takers on campus from 17:00 to 19:30. The test venue was unreasonable cold probably due to the malfunction of the air-conditioner (the room temperature of the campus is never properly adjusted to be honest!), so I was sort of worried that the test-takers, the students I’m teaching included, lost their concentration. I was told to be seated separately from the other test-takers as usual in order to prevent something unfair from happening, which in fact served me well in a sense that I was able to take the test with no one around. The impression that I had on the test was that compared to the listening section, the reading section was a bit difficult and time-consuming than usual. I had to ponder on a couple of the synonym questions, one of which is “preeminent and foremost”. The passage was about Frank Lloyd Wright, and the word “preeminent” modified his career or style. I was ashamed to confess that several trials of memory-jogging didn’t hit the word “preeminent” in my mental lexicon. I tried taking advantage of the context where the word was embedded, but after all, I answered it incorrectly. To nail the word in my mental lexicon so as not to cause the same trouble, I’ll look into it in tonight’s in a QW piece. Errrr… I’m so disappointed, even depressed, at my microscopic vocabulary size and my half-assed ability to infer the context. I really have to do something about it, seriously.

preeminent (a): surpassing all others, very distinguished in some way (OED)

e.g. 3) The survival instinct is preeminent over all the other instincts.

foremost (a): the most prominent in rank, importance, or position (OED)
e.g. 1) The issue should be foremost in our minds.
e.g. 2) Security was our foremost consideration.
e.g. 3) She occupies the foremost place among her colleagues.
(All the above example sentences are retrieved from The Kenkyusha Dictionary of English Collocations)
