Quick Write 120111 "Surprise from Dr. DeKeyser”

I’m a bit excited. That’s not because it’s already the most eventful month of the year, December, but because I’ve finally sent Dr. Robert DeKeyser my assigned paper. Every time I click the “send button” to submit a course paper, I say a prayer to myself like “May my paper be accepted without trouble, and hopefully be graded well (means A!)” in front of my pc, usually at midnight after consuming lots of snacks and sweets (that’s what I need to write paper, sort of tranquilizer I guess).

I attended Distinguished Lecture Series hosted by Temple University Japan campus at the beginning of last month. Dr. Robert DeKeyser, the lecturer, assigned the participants who were seeking a credit, i.e. Temple graduate school students in MA or Ph.D. programs. The workload of the assignment turned out to be far less than I had expected because the paper should strictly be 5 to 10 pages (10 is an absolute maximum), but the problem is … I’d never written a research proposal, and I didn’t know what the professor expectation was like! I was very much reluctant to start writing a draft and kept procrastinating, but the due date was approaching day by day. For the past three days, however, I intensively worked on the draft and finished writing it. Dr. DeKeyser was so knowledgeable a scholar as well as an eloquent, entertaining presenter, but I guess he’s not a generous grader considering he’s also a serious researcher. It made me cringe to work on the paper I’ll be submitting to him.

I had a nice surprise, though. As soon as I sent the e-mail with my course paper, Dr. DeKeyser sent me a quick reply. He asked whether I’m an MA student or Ph.D. student. Oh, no! I should’ve mentioned it somewhere. How lame I was. I soon responded, and he soon got back to me saying “Thank you!” Well, it was my fault that I didn’t say I’m an MA student, but the good thing is… I got to know the professor cares about it… so, well, probably he would apply a little more charitable criteria to the papers that MA students have written than those applied to Ph. D. students? Well, it’s a wicked though, right? I should be grateful for the fact that I’ve finally completed the assignment, and have another paper due in two weeks…. Well, well, well, the life goes on.
