Quick Write 111511 “Not in my department”

What comes up to your mind when you hear the word “department”? My guess is “a division of a large organization”. Is that right? But did you know that the word “department” also means “an area of special expertise or responsibility” and “(with modifier) a specified aspect of quality (OED)”? I’ve heard the word “department” in the latter meaning twice in three days. When I was watching “Dear Prudence” on SlateV late Monday night, I heard something like “I’m not ugly. In fact, I think I’m above average in the looks department.” I thought it was an interesting usage of the word “department”. This morning, again, I saw the phrase “not too strong in the subtlety department” on Twitter. Now I think it’s time for me to use this word myself to nail it in my active vocabulary storage. Here I go:

I’m not romantically-challenged. In fact, I’m above average in the sexiness department. I’m not too strong in the shrewdness department, though. Knitting a sweater for someone is never in my department, so please do not expect that kind of thing from me.

Don’t get me wrong. Those are the sentences I created just for the sake of English learning, okay?
