Quick Write 110311 “The Oracle Book”

The first thing I’d do when I go to the dentist is say hello to a receptionist and hand in my patient card. The second thing I’d do after giving the receptionist a nice smile and exchanging a few words is pick up a thick book from the bookshelf and read it just for a minute. I read “The Oracle Book”. Have you ever heard of "Bibliomancy” (I haven’t.)? It’s a kind of fortune-telling that a question, strictly “yes-no” question, should be answered by randomly choosing a word or passage from a book. My friend showed me the book almost a decade ago, so I knew what the book was. I found that the dentist I regularly go had the book and remembered reading it a long time ago. Then trying Bibliomancy with The Oracle Book has become my routine while waiting in the lobby of the dentist.

I’ve been kept asking two questions to the book these days. The answers form the book might’ve had implications, and I sort of like interpreting what the book told me. Yesterday, again, I asked the same two questions. Now let me share the answers.

1) Forget about everything.
Oh, it got me. I’ve never tried, or even thought of that solution, and it made me roll my eyes. When I gave the message second thoughts, however, it suddenly clicked. Oh yes, I can forget about it.

2) Go ahead only if you can afford the cost.
Well, the implication changes depending on how I define the cost, but it still makes sense to me. I’d interpret the message as it’ll surely take time and effort, but I can pull it off if I’m determined to do so. Okay, the future doesn’t look so bad.
