QuickWrite 102611 “Part 5 from Part 7-2”

QW 1026 continues to talk about how to learn about TOEIC Part 5 from Part 7 passages. In the previous post, I mentioned two ways to delve into Part 7 passages in order to learn vocabulary which is supposed to overlap the one appearing in Part 5. One is Ondoku (reading the passage aloud), and the other is to type up the passage and rewrite it with a different theme. Those are pretty much output-wise practice, and thus are expected to improve your speaking and writing skills while working on the Part 7 passages. Another option that QW 1026 is going to propose is a little bent toward something receptive, which you as well might call “Word-Class-Focused” learning.

Take the Official Book vol.4 Test 1 page 61 passage (“Memo on summer store hours”). It’s a compact passage with three straightforward questions, with which high-intermediate and advanced learners would almost never have problem in regard to answering the questions correctly. But this passage is too good to be just left untouched after identifying correct answers. For instance, let me pick up all the “verbs” and their objects or complements from the passage except be-verbs. You’ll learn much about vocabulary and grammar at the same time.

【11 Verbs】 Gram = Grammar tips Vocab = Vocabulary tips
1) recommend that S+V 2) remain open 3) foster more tourism and shopping 4) close
5) accommodate the extra hour 6) be lengthened 7) begin /end 8) be compensated 9) need to (do) 10) adjust your schedule 11) see

1) recommend that S+V
Gram: If the main verbs are the ones that try to cause some actions of the readers, such as “recommend, require, request, advise, demand, insist, order, propose, suggest”, the modal “should” after the sub-verb in a that-clause is omitted.

2) remain open
Gram: the verb “remain” takes a complement, either an adjective or noun phrase. In Part 5 questions, it could be tested as follows:
Downtown shops remain _ _ _ _ _ _ _ for extra hours.
A) opens B) opening *C) open D) openly

3) foster more tourism and shopping
Vocab: “foster” means to encourage the development of something, especially something desirable (OED). Synonyms for “foster” are “develop, support, encourage, promote, nurture” (Collins thesaurus).

5) accommodate the extra hour
Vocab: the verb “accommodate” is now frequently used in the TOEIC tests items.
a) If a building or space can accommodate someone/something, it has enough room for them.
b) To accommodate someone means to provide them with a place to live or stay.
c) If something is planned or changed to accommodate a particular situation, it is planned or changed so that it takes this situation into account.
d) If you do something to accommodate someone, you do with it with the main purpose of pleasing or satisfying them.

6) be lengthened
Vocab: “lengthen” means to make or become longer. (OED) Synonyms for “lengthen” are “extend, increase, stretch, expand, elongate” (Collins thesaurus).

8) be compensated
Gram: “compensate” means to give someone something typically money in recognition of loss, suffering, or injury incurred (OED). In Part 5 questions, it could be tested as follows:
All affected employees will _ _ _ _ _ _ _ for the extra time on an hourly basis.
A) compensate B) compensates C) have compensated *D ) be compensated

If you decide to focus on “verbs” for example, you can pick up all the verbs form the passage, check their meanings and definitions in English-English dictionaries, search for synonyms, learn their usages, find example sentences, and if possible, anticipate grammar questions in Part 5 (creating test items is a very effective training method). By doing so, you’ll learn so much about grammar and vocabulary the knowledge of which you are very likely to utilize in Part 5 and 6 questions. You can do the same thing to nouns, adjectives, adverbs in the passage. I bet it’s worth a try.
