Quick Write 100111 “Monologue vs. Dialogue”

Question. Which do you usually find more difficult to follow, monologues (talk, speech, or announcement by a single speaker) or dialogues (conversation or discussion between two people)? Of course I know your answer varies depending on topics, vocabulary used, pitch, pace, accents or other elements on speakers’ side. Still, you might tend to feel one is harder than the other. And why is that?

I listened to a twenty-minute discussion between two female native English speaking movie reviewers last night, and an hour-long podcast of New York Times weekly digest by a single male announcer this afternoon. Both audio materials differ in terms of topics (a comedy movie review and weekly news digest), pitch and tempo of the speakers (I didn’t find significant differences between these two, though.), meaning that there are certain valuables to be considered. Yet, I felt what I’ve always felt toward “Monologue vs. Dialogue” issue: Dialogue requires a bit more effort and attention than monologue.

I’m guessing that my view comes from “turn-taking” and “spontaneity” found in dialogues. In dialogues, two speakers talk in turns. Whenever turn-taking happens, listeners will need to direct their consciousness to the other speaker with a different pitch, tempo, voice-quality, and accents which may require extra effort on the listeners. Also, even though dialogues in educational or testing materials are scripted, most of the dialogues available to us are spontaneous. Listeners cannot always predict what pops up from either of the two speakers, which makes dialogues exciting, but also a bit challenging for language learners to follow.
