Quick Write 092211 “A tiny little laughter”

Typhoon Roke hit Japan yesterday and the public transportation systems here in the Kanto area were severely affected until midnight. The school at which I was supposed to teach two classes on Wednesday afternoon canceled all the classes in the morning, which I thought was a good decision. The transportation in and around Tokyo is surprisingly vulnerable to natural disasters like typhoons, so I could easily imagine that if I had been able to get to the school around noon, I would’ve had no means to go back home in the evening. I feel very sorry for the commuters who were stranded and forced to wait for trains and buses to resume services for many hours.

I learned on 3.11 that Twitter can be a good tool to collect real time information, so I kept myself logged in on Twitter and watched the ongoing situations. Twitter might be useful for not only obtaining information, but also sharing our feelings and emotions toward emergency, making us less uneasy and alone. In fact, the tweet I read as an RT soothed my mind in the midst of a stormy evening. From the tweet, “A conductor of the Chuo line made an announcement to the passengers, ‘(Our train would undoubtedly be affected by the typhoon on the way, but…) We’ll go as far as we can!’ and all the passengers burst into laugh.” I couldn’t help adoring the conductor’s professionalism and the announcement that turned out to be (or was intended to be?) “that” funny. I’m not really sure it’d be imprudent or thoughtless of me to state that the tweet was funny considering the people in such a tough situation, but I’d also conceive that if I had been on the train I would’ve laughed as well and been grateful for the moment that a tiny little laughter relaxed the passengers who were sharing the same weariness and exhaustion.
