Quick Write 092011 “QWing as assignment”

It’s been two weeks since the students from two classes I’ve been teaching at a foreign language institute started contributing their QW products to “Quick Write Forum”. It was rather an experimental project for me to ask my students to submit their writing assignment to an online BBS because I usually ask them to do so either by MS Word-file or in paper. Thanks to their cooperation and hard work, “QWing as assignment” is going well with no major problems.

This week’s assignment is to write a letter to console or give suggestions to a lady who’s been suffered from a shadow of her fiance’s ex-girlfriend. I try to pick up the articles which are relatable enough for the students most of whom are in their late teens to facilitate their writing as much as possible, and I hoped this week’s prompt was one of them. It turned out that each piece submitted amazed me, of course in a good way. That doesn’t mean there are no grammatical flaws or awkward word choices. Those technical issues aside, I can tell that the students tried hard to express their thoughts, ideas, and feelings in their own words. In fact, I’m very much impressed to see so much honesty and originality in their pieces. I believe that’s the very basic, but most important motive to communicate with others and the objective to learn any languages.

Last week I told my students candidly that I was so glad to see so many contributions posted on “Quick Write Forum”. It is obvious that they submitted their pieces since they were told to do so as a class assignment. Still, when I first saw more than 60 contributions posted in KIFL QW 1 thread, I was proud of and grateful for the fact that they worked on QWing very seriously. I’d really like them to regard this weekly QWing as not just the required writing practice, but also a good opportunity to seek the joy of writing in English, proudly seeing their pieces posted online, and learning from other people’s writing on the same theme. Actually, I learn pretty much from their writing. I believe the weekly QWing will do good for those who are graduating school and starting their English language learning life on their own pretty soon.
