Quick Write 090811 “The Difference 3”

“The Difference 3” goes into more of a sensuous aspect of what I call a “masterpiece”. For me, a great product of creative writing reads like a captivating, mesmerizing guitar solo or a briskly, energetically presented dance performance. Do I make myself understood here? What I’d like to say is that a masterpiece has its own melody, tempo, rhythm, or “flow” running through the whole piece. They could be either something syntactic, or phonetic, or semantic. I often realize that each of my beloved pieces carries me to another dimension that the author creates with its beautiful flow.

The pieces that have impressed me are usually added to the list of my daily speech practice unless they’re more than 5000 words. (It’s really hard to read a 5000 + something piece aloud daily!) Often times, it is not until after reading the piece aloud that I truly appreciate its tempo and rhythm, phonetic features in particular, that the masterpiece entails. A great piece gives you the pleasure of pronouncing the words and sentences thereof.

Such great pieces make me want to read aloud every day, appreciate their distinctive flow all over the pieces, and eventually, memorize the whole thing. Every time I recite my favorite pieces to the imaginary audience in front of me (how pathetic I am, you may think) puts me in raptures just like the ones I get while listening to skillfully, but not too self-indulgently rendered guitar solos with the best possible chord progression and melody.
