Quick Write 082511 “Whispering enhances fluency?”

The things that I’m going to write today are neither empirically proven nor something that I’d like to recommend to English learners who visit the QWF. I just thought that I’d like to share something unexplainable with you and keep the record of what happened to me more than one time. Yesterday, I suddenly decided to do house cleaning before going out to see my friend, and ended up having no time to do my daily speech practice. Can you imagine what I usually do in such a situation? 1) Give up the speech practice and do more on the next day. 2) Do the speech practice as usual and be late for the appointment. 3) Take the speech material with me and do wherever possible on the way to the destination. 4) Forget about everything. Pick one.

The answer is … 3) Take the speech material with me and do wherever possible on the way to the destination. I did that on the platform of Tokyo station when heading for a workplace in the western part of Tokyo. Luckily there was no “audience” around me, so I practiced with some of the materials in a little louder voice than whispering both on the platform and on the train for about 15 minutes. That was the case with yesterday’s practice. I took the materials with me and bought me a ticket of “Green Car”. (Yeah, I know it’s so extravagant a thing to do, but I had no other choice.) On a seat of Green car, I did my speech practice in a whispering voice for about 15 minutes, kept record of it on Twitter after getting off the train, and went out to see my dear friend. Sorry for my lengthy introduction, readers. What I really want to say here is whispering might have enhanced my speaking fluency.

When I practiced on the platform of Tokyo station, I found myself speaking more fluently and more effortlessly in class later that day. When I did speech practice this morning after yesterday’s whispering practice, I noticed that my mouth and tongue functioned more smoothly. Why could that happen? One of my guesses is that whispering produces almost no sound, and it enables me to focus more on how my mouth and tongue are used to produce certain sounds. Another speculation is that I could’ve spoken faster without using my vocal cord while whispering, and it’s eventually enhanced my speaking fluency and eloquence. Those are nothing more than my hypotheses and are yet to be empirically proven. Considering the fact that this happened to me twice, however, I can say it’s still worth giving some thoughts to. Well, I’ll have to keep doing whispering practice for days anyway. I’ve lost my “beautiful” voice due to the lack of care for my sore throat. I don’t really care about it because I’m off duty for one more week to come!
