Quick Write 082011 “Learn from the CEO”

This is the 4th day since my long-awaited summer vacation finally started. From morning till midnight (yes, it’s literally “midnight”. I’m a hard-core night owl.), I’ve been indulged in English learning. Well, it’s not actually “learning”. It’s more like I devour whatever English materials come into my sight and attract my interests. But I realized such Extensive Reading or Reading for Pleasure, or more frankly speaking, “gobbling” will take me nowhere rather than quenching my thirst for English learning temporarily. The past three, four days have fulfilled my hunger for English to a large extent, so I’ve decided to do something different today.

I had a chance to read an internal document that was sent from a certain CEO of a major company to its employees a few hours ago. It was a short memorandum to notify workers that the company decided to trim its hiring plans for the rest of this year. Whenever I happen to read such messages from company executives, I’d be impressed by the manner their messages are delivered. They’re written in a plain, but clever, cogent, and convincing way which should be a good writing sample for English learners. One of my favorite parts of the memorandum I read today is the following:

1) This decision was not made in reaction to any specific piece of news or fear of a recession. 2) We have a long record of investing through the tough times and I see no reason to deviate from that pattern. 3) It is especially important to bear in mind that we are having our best year ever financially.

1) seems effective to avoid unnecessary anxiety among employees. 2) is also conducive to reassuring workers that the company has a long history of dealing with economically tough situations, and the history will repeat itself. 3) confirms that the company’s enjoying their financial peak despite the current bad economic situations and calls for unity among its employees. Although there is not even a slim chance that I will be appointed as a company CEO in the rest of my life, I’d like to write such a powerful yet concise massage for someone in need. By the way, according to my English learning friend, paraphrasing is a good way to practice writing, so I’d try remaking the above passage in a more relatable situation.

1-a) This remark was not made in reaction to any specific piece of information or doubt of your infidelity. 2-a) We have a long record of reconciling through the tough times and I see no reason to deviate from that pattern. 3-a) It is especially important to bear in mind that we are having our best year ever in our relationship.

Well, I do hope that I won’t be in a situation where this version should be in use.
