Quick Write 081911 “Cause or Effect?”

Hereby, I would like to share some writing tips that I’ve learned from my yesterday’s post, QW 0818 “Evacuate Japan for a better job?” Do you usually care about “cause and effect” and “effect and cause” organizations while writing or reading English pieces? When you read English passages, especially something explanatory or descriptive, it is important to identify cause and effect organizations to comprehend what is stated with accuracy. Take these sentences for instance:

1) It’s very hot today. 2) Ice cream is selling well today.
Which is the cause, and which is the effect? Relying on the logic we have in common, we’ll soon tell 1) is the cause and 2) is the effect. There are some options to present those two sentences logically, using either conjunctions such as “because”, “for”, and “so” or adverbs or adverbial phrases such as “therefore”, “that’s why”, and “consequently”.
3-a) Ice cream is selling well today because it’s very hot.
3-b) It’s very hot today. That’s why ice cream is selling well.

What I did to my QW 0818 piece would go like this with the above example.
*3-c) Ice cream is selling well today. Does it mean it’s very hot?
It sounds rather strange, and I won’t write like that even though I’m still learning how to write well in English! People know that the temperature is high today, and that is something that you don’t need to infer as a possible cause for good sales of ice cream. It’s just obvious. But in some cases, 3-c) can be possible.
4) A lot of video rental shops are going out of business these days. Does that mean people stop watching movies at home?
I think 4) does make sense. “People stop watching movies at home” may (or may not) the cause for the sluggish video rental business, but it still is something that can be inferred as a possible cause. It’s not so obvious and worth posing a question for.

Finally, what I wrote for QW 0819 is the following.
5) I recently knew that it takes much longer than before for Japanese residents to obtain a work visa to get a job overseas. Does it mean that more and more people try to evacuate Japan seeking a better life and job?
In 5), my intention was that + Does it mean that ? Let me break them down into two sentences.
5-a) it takes much longer than before for Japanese residents to obtain a work visa to get a job overseas. =
5-b) more and more people try to evacuate Japan seeking a better life and job. =
To make the cause and effect relationship much clearer and less misleading, I could rewrite them using the conjunction “because” as follows.
5-c) I recently knew that it takes much longer than before for Japanese residents to obtain a work visa to get a job overseas. Is it because more and more people try to evacuate Japan seeking a better life and job?

By the way, things get really, really tricky if you change more and more in 5-b) into “less and less”.
5-a) it takes much longer than before for Japanese residents to obtain a work visa to get a job overseas.
5-d) “less and less” people try to evacuate Japan seeking a better life and job.
Now, please consider. Which is the cause, and which is the effect? You may judge 5-a) is the cause and 5-d) is the effect, right?
5-e) Less and less people try to evacuate Japan seeking a better life and job because it takes much longer than before for Japanese residents to obtain a work visa to get a job overseas.

See? But… are you still with me, dear QWers?

Writing just one grammatical sentence is not so difficult. But organizing multiple sentences logically in a passage can get that complicated. Yes, there are much more to learn about writing, but that makes me even more motivated to keep learning.
