Quick Write 080611 “Sugar-daddies are johns.”

Dear readers and QWers. Do you what “sugar-daddies” and “johns” in my today’s QW product title mean? Until this morning, I haven’t honestly. The two words come from the article on Salon h ttp://bit.ly/oohc9Z reporting the rise in female college students turning to "sugar daddy" dating sites. Reportedly, those female students saddled with huge student-loan debts are seeking help for a website that most often pairs young women with older wealthy men willing to financially support them. So, “sugar-daddies” can be defined as wealthy old guys who financially support young scholars and gain companionship, whether mentally and physically, or both, in return. Then, can you guess what “john” means here? Oh, well, I know it’s a paraphrase for “toilet”, but that doesn’t seem to fit in this context. Okay, I’ll run to our very reliable, financially charitable, always-there-for-you tutor, Merriam-Webster Online. It defines “john” as a prostitute's client. Oh, that perfectly makes sense, really. I guarantee that it’s a word that you’ll never come across in ESL textbooks or TOEIC prep books, though.

Now, I’ll stop mocking and get down to the point. The article makes me sad. It makes me all the sadder because it’s been an undeniable fact that wealthy guys afford young pretty girls, and those young pretty girls need a decent amount of money for whatever reasons. Due to the recent economic crises and a constant raise in the tuition fees, more and more students are suffering from student-load debt. The government has been reducing the financial aid to educational institutes due to its spending-cut. Things are intertwined here in the worst way as well. The article reminds me of one of my students in college who told me on the last day of class that she’s gonna take a 6-month leave from school due to financial reasons. I instinctively knew that she won’t come back although she said she wanted to pursue her academic interests. There’s no site offering “sugar-daddies” in Japan as far as I know, and never do I wish there would be any. But I do hope there would be any ways for the student to continue her study.

I think Huge Hefner is perfectly okay because he does this as business.
