Quick Write 080411 “Geological layer”

No worries, people. I’m not gonna lecture you about geography or archeology knowledge of which I happened to obtain from “Longman Preparation Course for TOEFL Test” book that I’m teaching. I’d just like to mention the words that my friend used to describe what we’ve been through all those years. My friend and I dined out at our favorite Korean Barbeque restaurant tonight to celebrate our successfully completing the first semester. We’ve known for four, five years since we worked as a part-time lecturer at a certain university, and she’s a good friend of mine.

“Geological layer” is the metaphor for our experiences which have been accumulated within ourselves. “The more experiences we’ve had, the thicker our inner geological layer gets.” said she. Yes, all the things we’ve experienced, good things and bad things, sweet memories and bitter memories, pain and pleasure are to be accumulated as a thick layer of wisdom that will make us wiser and stronger. At the same time, it could have an adverse effect, that is to say, “The thicker the layer is, the more likely we predict what’s gonna happen next.” Well, this might be a legitimate claim in a sense that as we grow older, we might be more knowledgeable, but things could be more predictable to us. But she astutely didn’t fail to mention this: “The more references we have from experiences, the more considerate we can be of other people’s thoughts and feelings.” Oh, yes. That gives me great hope for piling up my geological layer while growing older. Aging makes me lose something for sure, but has me gain something else, I hope.
