Quick Write 080211 “A chronic quitter of vocab. books”

When it comes to vocabulary building through those vocab. books, I’d surely hesitate to call myself an expert. But I wouldn’t hesitate to call myself a quitter. Since I started learning English at the age of twelve, almost three decades ago by the way, I think I’ve used more than 10 vocab. books including the ones strictly for university entrance exams and STEP 1st grade. It could be that I’d input a large number of words from those vocab. books, but those words have already been acquired to so unconscious a level that I no longer remember which word was learned from which book.

That being said, I’d still consider myself as an English learner who is a chronic quitter of vocab. book. (I do hope my dear students do not read this QW product, or… should they in fact?) The vocab. book that I failed to finish and left undone the most recently is the world-famous, well-known “Word Power Made Easy”. I remember having purchased the book about three years ago when I launched my TESOL MA project. I was full aware that my writing lacked, and still lacks unfortunately, the sophisticated words and phrases commonly used by native speakers of English back then. I searched for a vocab. book on Amazon. in order to deal with this issue, and jumped onto the book called “Word Power Made Easy”. And it turned out: it was so BORING to me. I tried “literally” multiple times while blaming my laziness and lack of guts, passion, and enthusiasm for English learning and eventually, I admitted my defeat. I gave up. That was so DRY and BORING that I couldn’t go on any further.

Now I don’t use, or won’t try using vocab. books anymore for my own good. Of course I occasionally recommend or even advise to seriously work on a certain book to those with the vocabulary size of less than 2000 or 3000 words or so. For the early stage of vocabulary building job, I think using vocab. books might be helpful for intensive input if the books are properly chosen and used. But not for me. I’ll continue to expand my vocabulary through reading authentic and real materials as available to us English learners on line as to native speaking readers.
