Quick Write 071211 “Birthday Song”

One of my students in my TOEFL class told me that today is M’s birthday. M is a diligent student who always sits in the front row and listens to every single word I say attentively. When we do Ondoku practice, his voice always resonates proudly in classroom.

These days I’m a little worried about him. He didn’t do well in the previous TOEFL ITP test conducted in June, and he seems to have lost confidence that he used to have. He wrote on a questionnaire distributed right after the TOEFL test that he thought he had done much better than the May TOEFL and realized his progress in test-taking skills. It turned out, however, that the result score he earned was far from below what he had expected. On the day he knew this rather disappointing news, he sure was depressed. But he was able to hold himself well and tried to concentrate on the lecture. I had no good word to make him feel better.

Today is his birthday, and I knew it from his classmate. Before class I said to him, “Okay, M. We’re gonna sing a birthday song for you later.” So did we. He made a voluntary speech (of course in English!) after our song gift was delivered. I saw errors in tense and word choice. Yet I was very proud of him. I was proud of his every single word uttered in English to those who sang a song for his birthday.

(3 min for brainstorming / 10+5 min for writing / 243 words)
