Quick Write 070711 “Fur-Suit Mascots”

When I was surfing newspaper/newsmagazine articles, which is my daily routine or “ritual” that unwinds me after work, I found the article reporting Japanese peculiar fur-suit mascots, kigurumi, on the Atlantic web site. The article covers lots of pictures of those mascots and explains Japanese subculture citing Jun Miura. That reminds me of my childhood “peculiar” memories. I can vividly recall the time when my mother and her friend took me to a musical for kids. You know what? I was so scared and terrified by those big, furry supposed-to-be-very-cute mascots! When the mascots got down from the stage and started wandering among the audience, I was about to scream and dying to run away as soon as possible. It was not a very decent act to do in the midst of a musical, and I knew what it was even as a child. I prayed, prayed, and prayed in order that those gigantic monsters would never come close to me. And that prayer thing worked! I still don’t know why I was so terrified and horrified by fur-suit mascots. I’ve got over with them now (of course!), but the fear I confined inside me among cheerful kids trying to touch, hug, and kiss those mascots will never fade away.
