QW 062812 “To-be-discussed Questions 0628”

Today’s article: Travel the World without Leaving Home

Discussion A
1) Would you like to use either World Wonders or Trail View? Why or why not?
To be honest, I won’t be using Work Wonders or Trail View to alternate actual trips to popular tourist destinations or wherever I’d like to visit. For me, the beauty of travelling is to stay away from home and put myself somewhere exciting, exotic or relaxing. Just seeing thousands of pictures or Street Views on the PC alone will never make me feel the way that I’d feel on my trip. Never.

2) Do you think World Wonders and Trail View are good substitutes for actual travel? Please explain further.
As I mentioned earlier, World Wonders and Trail View are never be substitutes for actual travel. Instead, they can be a good reference when making trip plan or doing research on specific places, just like encyclopedia with detailed visual information.

Discussion B
1) Do you think the Internet has made it easier or more difficult to travel? Please explain further.
I’d definitely say that the Internet has made it a lot easier for people to travel. You can do almost anything that you’d need to arrange your trip. For instance, when I was trying to book flights and accommodations in Seoul a few months ago, it was so easy to search for and reserve the most affordable and convenient flights and hotels. Only a few clicks of the mouse were what I needed to arrange my trip. It took me less than 30 minutes in total. Amazing.

2) What are the disadvantages of promoting online already popular sites?
One obvious disadvantages is that it encourages potential tourists to visit those already popular sites, making the places even more crowded and thus, less attractive. Plus, since promoting popular sites can provide experiences to visit there virtually, those who experienced virtual trips would feel that they no longer need to go there, which makes the popular sites boring. The popular tourist destinations have already established their visibility, so I think they don’t need further promotion or advertisement.

QW 062712 “To-be-discussed Questions 0627”

Today’s article: Softbank to Launch Smartphone That Can Detect Radiation

Discussion A
1) Is it reasonable for people in your country to be worried about radiation? Please explain further.
It is widely known that exposure to radiation can cause serious diseases, so it’s reasonable for the Japanese people to concern about radiation. In particular, parents raising small children do care whether their children would be affected by radiation because young people can be affected by radiation more seriously than grown-ups.

2) Do you think that having a radiation-detecting smartphone will make them feel less worried? Why or why not?
I admit that a radiation-detecting smartphone accommodates the needs of those who’re worried about radiation, but detecting radiation alone won’t make them feel safe. There should be solutions to handling emission of radiation at the same time in order to get rid of concerns of those people completely.

Discussion B
1) What do you think are the best ways customers can communicate with companies nowadays?
Today, there are a lot of platforms for customers to voice their needs and wants to companies, such as Twitter or Facebook. Masayoshi Son of Softbank, for instance, tries listening to what people on Twitter have to say about the company and their products, and reflects their opinions to their products and services. One good thing about Twitter is you can be anonymous. It makes easier for you to make candid and honest comments on the company.

2) Can you think of a product that you wish you could ask a company to make or add new features to? Please explain your answer.
It might not be a new product or even a new feature, but I truly hope batteries of smartphones last longer than just one day. My smartphone consumes a lot of battery and requires recharging so soon. Mobile phone companies should develop smartphones with longer-life battery. It’s bound to sell well.

QW 062612 “Virtual Online Discussion 0626”

Today’s article: Cuba Takes Pride in Its Boxers

Discussion A
1) Cubans do well in boxing. What sport do you think your countrymen are good at? Please explain the reasons for this.
As far as I know, our countrymen like playing baseball and soccer when they’re young, and they start playing golf after they’ve grown up. Being physically less demanding than baseball and soccer, golf is loved by elderly people in Japan, my father included. I have no idea why those sports are so popular among the Japanese guys, to be honest. One thing that I’m sure is that I’ll never like playing golf myself. For me, it’s not a sport, but a means of socializing when played by lay people.

2) Does your government do a lot to promote sports or help people train for sports? Why do you think so?
In terms of promoting and funding sports, I think the Japanese government is notorious for its stinginess. Take the Olympic medalists for instance. They’re basically amateur athletes, so they need to be supported financially to keep themselves trained in order to compete in the Olympics. What the government would do for them is award a very small amount of money to medal-winning athletes only after they’ve accomplished the feat. The government seems to have no intension to support and promote amateur sports financially. I cannot help feeling sorry for those athletes who could’ve earned much more respect and financial support from the government.

QW 062512 “To-be-discussed Questions”

Today’s article: “Family with Naughty Child Asked to Leave Airplane”

Discussion A
1) Do you agree with the airline’s decision to make the family leave? Why or why not?
I’d disagree with the airline’s decision if it was the only reason that the boy was not be able to sit properly, and was truly in danger of choking due to the length of the seatbelt. I’d never imagine that a three-year-old boy would disturb the plane to take off safely, and I think it’s the airline’s fault that the seatbelt didn’t fit the boy. It could’ve prepared a more suitable seatbelt or a child seat for such a small children.

2) How do you think similar incidents can be prevented in the future?
Kids and toddlers are always like that, and we knew that. To provide better services, the airline companies should consider setting up clear guidelines for passengers with small children regarding safety issues, and the passengers need to be aware of that. Also, the airline companies can design a special seat or an area for small children to take their flight comfortably as well as safely.

Discussion B
1) What do you think causes a child to misbehave?
One of the reasons might be that they are in bad temper; they can be tired, sleepy, or hungry. Another reason could be that children are feeling they’re left unattended. They deliberately misbehave to draw attention of their parents.

2) How can parents and guardians discipline their children properly?
One way of doing that is that parents and guardians would never change rules and policies regarding how children should behave and always be consistent. Otherwise, children would try negotiating their rules and policies by doing something beyond control to win what they’d want. Also, parents and guardians need to explain why they think their rules and policies are important to their children when a problem arises.

QW 062112 “Phase 2”

T= My pronunciation teacher A= Aya

T: A couple of improvements there... Intonation has definitely improved there. You were inflecting the correct words.
A: Oh yeah? Wow.
T: You were stressing the correct words. You were putting emphases on where is supposed to be put, and that makes the article more understandable… You know, when you’re reading the news, you don’t bore listeners to death. So the monotony is definitely one thing that should be, you know, thrown out of the window. So, I noticed that, you know, there were just peaks and valleys in there, intonation.
A: Oh yes? I’m really flattered. Thank you very much, teacher.
T: (Laughs) You’re welcome. Plus, the pauses. I’ll just spot on. There’re just there in right places.
A: Oh yeah?
T: And that’s, that’s really impressive.
A: Okay… Well, “That being said,”
T: (Laughs) I was gonna go to that, you know, I wanna have variety of what I do. I’m not gonna say “That being said”.
A: “That being said,…” right. (Laughs)
T: Now that you have variety of “That being said”.
A: I’ll hold my breath and wait for the moment to come.
T: Well, there were not many areas for improvement for tonight…

It took me six weeks to obtain such flattering comments from you, my pronunciation teacher. I always appreciate your being truthful and candid about my pronunciation. Your positive feedback allows me to move on to Phrase 2 of Pronunciation Project 2012. To conclude the tonight’s memorable QW piece, let me just add that it was just mind-blowing that you were able to tell how tall I am. You uttered the exact height of mine. You’re the amazing teacher of mine!
